Meet Sharon Kelly: The Story Behind Now She Builds

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
As a Black British woman entering midlife, I have often felt invisible in society. Many of my life experiences have been harsh but invaluable. I am a first-generation Brit. My parents came to England from Jamaica, believing in the promise of opportunity, fair work, and equity. In reality, black people were treated as outsiders.
My mum raised my sister and I as a Registered Nurse, single-handedly in a council house. Through determination and hard work, she became one of the few on our road to buy her own home. Later, she worked full time, earned a degree in Psychology, and changed careers in her 50s enabling her to significantly increase her income - an extraordinary achievement during a time when women had limited career options.
In my 20s I had a wonderful career, and as an independent consultant, I received promotions within a short period of time and initially worked within Project/Programme Management for organisations such as NTL (now known as Virgin Media) and Cisco Systems Inc. I travelled extensively in those days and was so focussed on delivering for my clients that I barely noticed the seasons change or the San Francisco Bridge because my head was so deep into my laptop!
Once I had my first child in my early 30s I switched into Change Management - a role that required similar skills but enabled me to change the behaviours of my client’s staff so that they were ready for the transformation. It is at this point that my interest in psychology began.
Like my mum, my sister and I were told that meritocracy would reward hard work and qualifications. I pursued multiple degrees: a Business Studies degree while working full time in my early 20s, a Psychology degree while pregnant with my second child, and a Masters in Organisational Behaviour (Occupational Psychology) with a two-week-old baby in tow.. long story.
I worked hard, sacrificed personal time, yet despite my experience and qualifications, my career trajectory remained the same. No promotions, no increase in rate, and often no work. So, on paper, I had achieved a lot - degrees, certificates, marriage, children, houses with equity - but I was asset rich and cash poor.
MID-LIFE CAREER CHALLENGES AND SYSTEMIC BARRIERS
Throughout my working life, I have seen the realities of midlife women creating income and building businesses firsthand. I have navigated both glass and concrete ceilings while balancing family responsibilities, yet despite working long hours and earning well over a million pounds across my career, my savings and retirement funds didn’t reflect my efforts.
Like many midlife women seeking to generate income and grow financial independence, I faced invisible systemic barriers due to societal expectations that women pause careers for caregiving, have limited access to capital for starting businesses, and productivity advice that doesn’t account for our significant parenting responsibilities. It took a while for me to realise that achieving financial freedom for women over 40 requires more than working hard - it requires intentional planning, strategic income generation, and the right support.
THE PANDEMIC YEARS
During the Pandemic, I was intensely laser-focused on work, trying to secure financial stability for my family in a very uncertain world. Early December 2020 Just before my 50th birthday, I became seriously ill with what I thought was the worst case of flu that I’d ever had and just couldn’t shake. Fortunately, my eldest daughter was able to nurse me whilst I was cared for my husband who was yo-yoing between isolation and hospitalisation with Covid-19. I learned months later that the flu that I just couldn’t shake was Covid-19. The damage to my lungs told the tale months later at a routine scan. These experiences highlighted the importance of health, balance, and financial security for midlife women.
REFLECTION AND SABBATICAL
After the Pandemic, I handed in my notice despite having a ‘golden ticket’ of a guaranteed contracts for the foreseeable future, and being the primary earner. I was burned out and misaligned with my work, values, and family priorities. Reflecting on my life, I realised that despite financial success on paper, I still had limited cash flow, savings, and investment. I learned that my frustrations were not due to my personal failure but due to systemic barriers, which had shaped my financial journey.
For decades, I studied entrepreneurship, financial success, passive income, multiple streams of revenue, and business growth through the lens of a midlife woman. I recognised that many women over 40 face the same challenges that I have: they pause careers for caregiving, start low-capital businesses that fail due to competition, or struggle to build wealth despite high qualifications and hard work.
